A Message from the State Attorney

Dear Friend,

There is no feeling like that of being sworn in as an Assistant State Attorney. It is a moment that is so powerful and meaningful in the life of a lawyer. The responsibility that comes with being a prosecutor is not easy. You are held to a higher standard and not everyone is meant for the challenge. A career in public service is a passion and seeking justice for victims is truly a privilege.

At that precise moment when you raise your right hand and take the oath, you are filled with so much emotion, excitement, pride, and even a bit of fear. You think of all those challenges you pushed through and everything it took to survive law school and pass the bar exam. Besides the personal sacrifices you made, you think of the sacrifices made by your family, friends, and loved ones. All of them were difficult but now you see that it was all worth it.

For me, it is always special to see the smiling faces of our new prosecutors, as well as their families and friends who attend the swearing-in ceremonies. This year, it was held in courtroom 4-1 of the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building. I was proud to administer the Oath of Office, officially marking the beginning of each prosecutor’s service to the people of Miami‑Dade County.

I reminded the class that the work of a prosecutor demands integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication, emphasizing the vital role each plays in upholding the rule of law. Above all they are expected to do the right thing.

Judge Monica Gordo of the Third District Court of Appeal delivered the Florida Bar Oath, joined by Judges William Altfield and Jean Lody. We are grateful that all three distinguished former ASAs returned to support and encourage the incoming class on such a memorable occasion.

Leaders from across the justice system, including Miami‑Dade Clerk of Courts Juan Fernandez‑Barquin, Coral Gables Police Chief, Ed Hudak, and Miami‑Dade Sheriff’s Office Assistant Sheriff Fernand Charles attended the event highlighting the strong partnerships that strengthen public safety in our community.

I and the entire SAO family welcome this new class of ASAs into the SAO family, a community committed to mentorship, excellence, and service. We look forward to the contributions they will make as they begin this new journey.

Thank you and God Bless,

Sincerely,
