Mental Health Treatment Courts are a voluntary alternative to the traditional criminal court system. The courts were established to divert eligible misdemeanor and felony offenders with serious mental illnesses (SMI) or co-occurring SMU and substance abuse disorders from the criminal justice system into community-based treatment and support services.
