Paralegal Specialist III – Domestic Crimes Unit

Position Overview:

 The Paralegal Specialist III is responsible for having a full time Pre-file Conference calendar, reviewing evidence, and determining charges on arrest cases.  This Unit deals with the most serious of domestic violence cases, which includes graphic details of horrific incidents and exposure to profane language. In addition, this position is cross-trained to handle walk-in cases as needed.  The work schedule for this position is:  8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position does not offer the ability to telework.

 

The Job Responsibilities are:

  •  Having a full time Pre-file Conference calendar of appointments in order to take testimony from victims and witnesses
  • Requesting labs, certified priors, consents, and other records/reports
  • Being able to determine correct charges for filing
  • Completing charge forms, discovery, and no action memos
  • Explaining the dynamics of domestic violence, and counseling and providing triage to the victims
  • Understanding all the intricacies of civil matters like Injunction for Protection Orders
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

The Minimum Requirements are:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, and two (2) years’ experience as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Specialist,
    Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator), or
  • Associate Degree and four (4) years’ experience as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Specialist,
    Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator), or
  • Successful completion of a two (2) year paralegal program and four (4) years’ experience as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Specialist, Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator), or
  • Six (6) years equivalent combination of education and work experience working as a Paralegal,
    Victim Witness Specialist, Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator)

The Preferred Qualifications and Skills are:

  •  Having experience working with domestic violence victims and an understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and how to cope with victims in crisis
  • Having working knowledge of community-based programs
  • Being fluent in English and Spanish

Starting Annual Salary:  $40,352.64

*Note:  Annual salary includes a pay differential of $2400.00 that would be removed if the selected candidate is moved out of the position.
