Paralegal Specialist II – Misdemeanor Domestic Violence Unit

Position Overview
The Paralegal Specialist II in the Misdemeanor Domestic Violence Unit is responsible for having a full time Pre-file Conference calendar of appointments in order to take sworn testimony from victims, witnesses and police officers, to determine if the appropriate filing charges were made at the time of the arrest. The schedule for this position is 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Job Responsibilities are:
- Submitting clear, concise and grammatically correct written statements of facts for the attorneys to review
- Attending bond and arraignment hearings to interview, assess, provide victim advocacy and take sworn statements
- Explaining the dynamics of domestic violence, and counseling and providing triage to the victims
- Cross-training in the handling of walk-in cases as needed to determine if criminal charges can be filed
- Handling weekend bond hearing calls on a rotational basis
- Understanding all the intricacies of civil matters like Injunction for Protection Orders
- Performing other related duties as assigned
The Minimum Requirements are:
- Bachelor’s Degree, and one (1) year experience as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Specialist, Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator), or
- Associate Degree and three (3) years’ experience as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Specialist, Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator), or
- Successful completion of a two (2) year Paralegal program and three (3) years’ experience as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Specialist, Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator), or
- Five (5) years equivalent combination of experience working as a as a Paralegal, Victim Witness Specialist, Case Analyst, or Legal Assistant (Trial Coordinator)
The Preferred Qualifications and Skills are:
- Having experience working with domestic violence victims and an understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and how to cope with victims in crisis
- Having working knowledge of community-based programs
- Being fluent in English and Spanish

Starting Annual Salary: $37,952.64
